Music & Text in American Popular Culture is a historically rooted exploration of the relationships between literature and music as conceived, performed, and received in United States. We will explore key concepts and practices through close examination of American classical, popular, and folk songs. This includes songs written from scratch as well as musical settings of famous poems and the use of famous melodies to sing new poems. This course does not assume prior knowledge of American history or literature, nor does it assume deep knowledge of music (written or performed), but we will work as much as possible with primary materials and we will be engaging in deep listening and analysis of musical sound. This course makes use of three sets of theoretical approaches common to both literature and music: · Power-Knowledge-Play· Form-Content-Voice· Appropriation-Participation |
