Brief |
In this course, we will examine the importance of creative arts for humanity, the changing role of arts in modern high-tech life, and various ways that public institutions both support and regulate artists. From international-comparative and historical perspectives, we will consider empirical research findings on the impact of arts (essential rituals, civic wellbeing, existential meaning, and emotional expression), as well as ways that the value and originality of artistic products are assessed (aesthetics and arts marketing), public systems of patronage and recognition, the arts in school education, and current issues in intellectual property and national branding of arts. Students who complete this course will gain an international perspective into why the arts matter, how arts are changing in modern life, and how government can effectively support the arts to ensure a higher quality of life for the citizenry. |
