CUPL Hosts Top-level Forum on China’s Discourse and Discipline Development of Culture of the Rule of Law

A top-level forum on “China’s Discourse and Discipline Development of Culture of the Rule of Law”was held on the Haidian Campus,       CUPL on On July 13. The forum presided over by Professor Yu Xueming, dean of the School of Hunanities, CUPL was organized by the Institute of Culture of the Rule of Law, and sponsored by the School of Humanities, CUPL. 

Experts from renowned institutions and scholars including some faculty and postgradutes of the School of Humanities attended the forum to exchange views on the significance, prospect and development orientation of Culture of the Rule of Law as a discipline. Among them are Xu Xianming, vice chairman of the Supervisory and Judicial Affairs Committee of National People's Congress, Ma Huaide, president of CUPL, Zhou Zhanhua, vice president of the Legal Culture Research Association of the China Law Society, and Xu Haijian, director of the Legal Culture Department of the Law Popularization and Legal Governance Bureau of the Ministry of Justice.

In his speech, Ma Huaide pointed out that building up the interdisciplinary program in Culture of the Rule of Law, featured by quality resources in law studies, and combined with the sound foundation for humanities and social sciences of our university, is of great significance in the times of promoting law-based governance in all respects. Ma also expressed his expectancy for further disciplinary development of Culture of the Rule of Law in our university.

Professor Cui Yunhuadirector of the Institute of Culture of the Rule of Law affiliated to the School of Humanities, CUPL presented to the forum the history and status quo of the discipline of Culture of the Rule of Law, which was started as a tertiary discipline under the Science of Lawrecruiting postgraduates for master’s degree in 2007, and was updated as a secondary discipline to offer master and doctor’s degrees, being the first across China. With 14 years’growth, the discipline of Culture of the Rule of Law has yielded plentiful results in academic innovation, curriculum design, talent development, socail service and etc..

Professor Xu Xianming and Senior Professor Li Deshun made keynote speeches successively. In retrospect of the motivation to creat the discipline of Culture of the Rule of Law and its early days of development, Xu explained the value basis and historical context of Culture of the Rule of Law, elaborated the essential implications and epic characteriscs of Culture of the Rule of Law in current     China, and he also pointed out the orientation for further development of the discipline in the future.

Professor Zhang Haojun, deputy dean of the School of Humanities, CUPL presided over the panel dicussion, where Professor Li Deshun shared his understanding of the theorey meaning and discipline development of Culture of Rule of Law. A number of scholars, including Mr. Xu Haijian, director of the Legal Culture Department of the Law Popularization and Legal Governance Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, exchanged their views on history, discourse system, disciplinary growth, research team development of Culture of Rule of Law. Among the experts in the panel discussion were Zhou Zhanhua, vice president of the Legal Culture Research Association of the China Law Society, Su Yigong, professor of the Law School of Tsinghua University, Xu Aiguo, professor of the Law School of Peking University, Li Qirui, professor of the Northwest University of Political Science and Law, Shou Xinbao, secretary of the Party General Branch of Wenbo Academy, East China University of Political Science and Law, Zhao Xiaohua, professor and deputy dean of the School of Humanities, Zhang Qing, professor and dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Tian Linan, professor and deputy dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Zhang Lei, professor and deputy dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Liu Xuzhou, professor and deputy dean of the School of Journalism, and Zou Yuhua, professor of the School of Humanities, CUPL.

At the end of the forum, Professor Wen Bing, director of the Center for the Rule of Law and Culture Studies, CUPL made a conclusion for the forum and analysed the challenges and opportunities for the disciplinary development of Culture of Rule of Law may meet.
