Institute ofCulture of the Rule of Law was founded in 2019 and was affiliated with School of Humanities. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Ph.D. program ofculture of the rule of law initiated by China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). In 2007, CUPL took the lead in starting the Ph.D.program of culture of the rule of law in the major of legaltheory. One year later, CUPL set the first master program of culture of the rule of law in China. In 2014, the program of culture of the rule of law was listed in the Admissions Guide as an independentsecondary discipline and run by School of Humanities at the first time. Dozens of postdoctors have started to work here since 2015. In the past over ten years, about one hundred Ph.D. students have finished their courses and havereceived their degrees here.Three majors can be selected in both the Ph.D. program and the master program of culture of the rule of law: (1) Legal Theory; (2) History of Law; (3) Logics and Languages in Law.
By now, 8 Ph.D. supervisors and 10 master supervisors work for the institute. The faculties specialize mainly in the field of law, philosophy (including religious studies and logics), journalism, history and Chinese literature. The institute, which also employs scholars from other schools and universities, has a very strong and cooperated research team. Students can have two supervisors, one from the institute and the other from other departments within or even outside CUPL. Prof. Li Deshun, the leading scholar in the institute and in the field of culture of the rule of law, is the first among Chinese scholars to promote the idea of the integration of the country of the rule of law, government of the rule of law, society of the rule of law and culture of the rule of law. His research lays the foundation forculture of the rule of law and stands for the best of this field.
Culture of the rule of law, focusing on the rule of law, is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive subject with Chinese characteristics. This academic topic is not only an extension of legal study, the product achieved by applying philosophy and other disciplinesin humanities to study urgent practical problems, but also a profoundintegration of the above two aspects. The study of culture of the rule of law is both helpful to the research of law, philosophy, and other disciplines and to the integration of them. Practically, the Ph.D. and master programs havegreatsignificance not only in cultivating high quality graduates who can meet the demand of the era, but also in promoting the rule of law in China.
