“The rule of law and culture” is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive emerging discipline with “the rule of law” as the research object and “culture” as the research perspective. In 2007, China University of Political Science and Law set up a doctoral program in culture of the rule of law for the first time in China. Then in 2008, the first master’s program was set up. Approved by the Office of Academic Degree of the State Council in 2013, “culture of the rule of law” became a secondary discipline of law set up by CUPL; and it began to formally recruit master’s and doctoral students in 2015. Since the establishment of Center for the Rule of Law and Culture Studies at CUPL, it has been devoted to developing this discipline.
Center for the Rule of Law and Culture Studies of China University of Political Science and Law was formally founded in January 2011. Prof. Li Deshun, one of the five tenured professors at CUPL, is the honorary director. And Prof. Wen Bing at School of Humanities, CUPL is the director. Most researchers at the center are teachers from relevant fields of law, philosophy (including religion and logic), history, Chinese language and literature, along with some external scholars as part-time researchers, composing a research team with strong strength and complementary disciplines. In addition, the center has hired dozens of experts with high academic attainment and rich practical experience in legal media, government departments, and legal practice as part-time professors to support the disciplinary development of culture of the rule of law and to strengthen the cultivation of students’ theoretical and practical ability.
The study of the rule of law and culture has great theoretical and practical significance. From the academic perspective, it is not only a product of the combination of law and practice, but also a product of in-depth research in the field of philosophy and many subjects of humanities and social sciences. It also provides a platform for the deep integration of these two aspects. The study of the discipline has particular significance for the in-depth research and integration of law, philosophy and other social sciences. From the practical perspective, the construction of culture of the rule of law is of far-reaching significance to promoting the development of the socialist rule of law in China.
We sincerely look forward to and welcome the experts in professional circle concerned about the rule of law in China to join in the development of the center, so that we can work together to promote the development of the rule of law in China!
